One of the most effective ways to memorialize your dog is to gather up all his toys and things that were special to him, like a favorite blanket. Put them in a dedicated box — it can be as simple as a shoe box or something fancy you order just for this purpose. Add photos of happy memories of the two of you together.
That way, every time you find yourself missing him, you can take out the box and relive the good times. Visit our Gifts and Memorials page for other ideas to memorialize your pet.

Long-term grief is not uncommon when you lose a dear pet. Part of the problem is that we live in a culture where pet grief is not talked about. There are no specific rituals around pet grief, no bereavement leave from work, and the pain of pet loss is not always taken seriously by people without pets, or by those without a special pet connection.

So to process your long-term grief, it’s often useful to address it head-on. You can journal about it, talk to a therapist, or get a pet grief coach. Joining our Healing From Pet Loss Community tends to be invaluable in instances of long-term grief, simply because members report feeling seen and heard by others who truly understand how they feel.
